3/18 Review: Company Daughter by Callan Primer

A girl. A saucepan. A plan to conquer the universe.

Aleta Dinesen doesn't see the point of hanging around home, not when she can cook a mean paella. But her plan to conquer the universe one meal at a time runs afoul of her overprotective father, commander of a tough mercenary company. And when he puts his foot down, he's got the firepower to back it up.

Undeterred, Aleta escapes the dreadnaught she calls home one step ahead of the gorgeous, highly disapproving Lieutenant Park, the unlucky young officer tasked with hauling her back. But the universe isn't the safe place she thought it was. Stranded in a dangerous mining community, she clings to survival by her fingernails. Only by working with someone she can't stand will she have a chance to escape, proving to everyone that a teenage cook can be the most dangerous force in the universe.

Review: I was given this book for a honest review, Thank You :)

"Do you have any idea how fortunate you are to grow up here? Can you even see how everyone bends over backward to make you happy? Princess Aleta, he said scorn. I would like to be around when you find out the universe doesn't care about you. But with the way your father protects you, it will be a long time coming. If ever."

When I first started reading I wasn't sure where this was going. Aleta from the start was hilarious, but I felt she didn't think things through at all. She wanted to get away and be on her own and was determined to do it. After she finally gets away, things do not go as planned and after almost dying, she ends up in a mining community, where the air is not free and you have to earn it. The air court are the ones who control the air and she is given 5 days of air. After she uses all her air she becomes a redliner and is living minutes by minutes for air, you see her really struggling, living on the streets with other fellow redliners, they become a close group and help each other out. After time goes by and her dad has not come to rescue her, she decides to put her cooking skills to the test and opens up her own noodle shop and things start to look up for her. She is in one of the worst situations but she seemed happy to be taking care of herself and she helped her fellow redliners.

Then someone shows up to the mining community wanting to strike it rich and guess who it is? Yep your one and only Lieutenant Park, well now he is Private Park. Aleta is shocked buy happy and feels for him. But things are not going as planned.

"You didn't tell anyone. No one knows you're here. No one knows I'm alive. No one knows anything. This isn't a rescue, this, this is a flaming idiot falling into the same stupid trap, right on top of me."

They strike up this friendship of sorts and you see this attraction, well I did. I was really hoping to see them maybe get together. They were hilarious at times. I really enjoyed this story, and the characters, so much detail. Thank you again.

  1. So glad you liked it, Minerva. And I don't think I'm giving too much away to say that even though Aleta has a bit more growing up to do--Joe is persistent ;)
