Review: Mine to Spell by Janeal Falor

Cynthia has always hidden from her father’s hexes behind her older sister. When her family gains independence unheard of for women, she’s relieved that her days of harsh punishments are over. But as her seventeenth birthday approaches—the typical age to be sold to a new master—death threats endanger her sisters. She now faces two options: run or meet society’s expectations.

For once, Cynthia isn’t going to let her older sister shield her from the problem. She’s going to prove to herself, her sisters, and society that her family isn’t a threat to their traditions. She willingly chooses to be purchased by a new master. A bold step that takes her somewhere she never thought she would go and to a man she might possibly fall in love with. With his help, she may just find a way to save her sisters while discovering how to stand up for herself. If she lives long enough.

I would love to thank Janeal Falor for gifting me this book for a honest review.

This book is the second book in The Mine series, this book starts off  where we left off in the first book. This is Cynthia's story. Cynthia is very different from Serena. While Serena hates magic and avoids it, Cynthia loves using it and wants to develop it. She is very powerful and has been doing spells for years now. She has been able to keep it a secret from everyone. When the time comes for her to pick a master, she wants to help her family and not make things worse for them. When she decides on the warlock and is forced to leave with him, she is frightened. When she realizes her situation is very bad with her new master she escapes, now alone and walking in new strange town. When a stranger steps in to help her, she is not sure what to think about this warlock trying to help her.

I liked Lukas from the start, coming from a different country where woman are not treated so horribly and are able to use magic, he is there to help the woman of Cynthia's country. We see Cynthia and Lukas start this friendship of sorts, with Lukas helping Cynthia with her spells and saving her life a few times. Cynthia is strong, brave and really wants to change things for all woman in her country. When Cynthia decides to do the impossible and enter the tournament, all the warlocks are in a frenzy to stop her.

"This is it then. Serena and I prepared the way for change, or at least have got people thinking. Our choices brought us here. Hers proving that women can have freedom. Mine to spell as well as any warlock. Now everyone in the country knows what woman are capable of. What we can be."

I loved that Both Serena and Cynthia have started to show everyone that it doesn't have to be this way, that woman should be treated better, not be slaves. Great read, great series. Thank you
